When it comes to jewelry, gold is one of the most popular choices. But did you know that there are a couple types of gold? White gold and yellow gold are both popular choices, but they have some distinct differences.
White gold is an alloy of gold and other metals, such as silver, platinum, and zinc. It once contained nickle but due to allergies that is less common that it once was. It is usually plated with rhodium to give it a bright white color. White gold is a popular choice for engagement rings and other jewelry because of its bright, modern look. It is doesn't dull like platinum does and stays bright and shiny. The addition of the alloys do help with strength and in showcasing stones like diamonds. So we often choose to have a white gold head or prongs even on a yellow gold ring.
Yellow gold is pure gold, and it is the most traditional choice for jewelry. It has a warm, classic look that is timeless.
Our vendors don't have a difference in cost in most cases between the two. However if you are picking 14kt vs 18kt gold that is where the cost will increase. Most of our peices especially bridal, anniversary, and stack bands are available in white, yellow and even rose gold.
When it comes to care, both white and yellow gold require regular cleaning and polishing to keep them looking their best. White gold should be re-plated with rhodium every few years to keep its bright white color. When you purchase a ring at Saxon's we promise to rhodium your ring in the shop here at the store once a year at no charge if you want. Although most people do not need it done that often. It is depended on PH levels, body chemistry, hand washing practices, chemicals you interact with ect. Yellow gold does not require re-plating, but it should be cleaned and polished regularly. As with all jewelery we would reccomend you come into the store every 6 months for us to clean and check your ring. But like we always say, you can't over check/clean so anytime you are in the Old Mill stop by and see us!
