Cuts Different- the art of diamond cutting

By Kati MaganaJune 13, 2023

Diamonds for centuries have been the most sought after gemstone in the world. Their brilliance and hardness, rarity an beauty make them the ultimate symbol of luxury and status. But before they become an exquisit peice of jewelery we see in store it has to go through an extensive process of cutting a polishing. It is a process that requires a deep understanding of the stones properites.

The history of diamond cutting can be traced back to the 14th century when diamonds were first used as ornaments in the European royal courts. At that time, diamonds were cut and polished by hand using other diamonds as tools. This process was labor intensive and slow, it often resulted in imperfect cuts and shapes. Overtime this process was improved, and as technology advanced it made the process more precise and much faster

Today diamond cutting is a complex process that involves several stages. The diamonds are first analyzed to see the best option for the stone and what to cut it into. Then it is marke d and planned using computer software to optimize the cut and minimize the waste.

Next, the basic shape is cut into its basic shape using a diamond saw. This is followed by the faceting process, then they are cut and polished to create facets that reflect light and give the diamond its signature sparkle. The number, size and placement of the facets are critical in determining the diamonds brilliance.

The final stage of the process is the polishing, the diamond is cut and buffed and cleaned to bring out the optimum sparkle, luster and shine, this is a delicate process that requires special equipment and craftsmanship.

Truly the art of cutting is not just about the cutting itself, it is about understanding the material so you can maximize the stones value by cutting it in a way that enhances the natural beauty and brilliance. The skill of the cutter can greatly affect the diamonds value.

For the first time, we at Saxons's are inviting you on a journey, a chance to see this art in person. We have arranged for a world class diamond cutter to come to the store for a public cutting session in the store. Saturday June 24th from 12-4pm come in and see this in person for yourself. We are so excited to share this with Central Oregon.
