The Lydian Hoard, a collection of dazzling artifacts, coins, and jewelry, is a testament to the kingdom's wealth and craftsmanship.
The discovery of the princess tomb in 1960 led shady treasure hunters to poach intricately designed pieces that reflect the artistry and affluence of the Lydian civilization. Inside the trove were more than 350 articles of gold and silver. The tomb was ransaced and the contents sold to the Metropolitan Musume of Art in New York City.

The articles were put on a permanent display at the Met in 1984 under an incorrect provenance. In 1986, Turkey demanded that the items be returned and The Met refused. The following year Turkey filed a lawsuit. After a lengthy court case, the artifacts were finally returned to Turkey in the 1990s, where they now reside in the Uşak Museum.
The most well known peice of the collection is the one pictured above- the hippocamus, a winged seahorse made in gold.
